Why do Japanese people ask about blood type (血液型)?
血液型 (ketsuekigata, “blood type”) carries cultural weight in Japan well beyond medicine: A types are seen as careful and detail-oriented, O types as confident natural leaders, B types as free-spirited individualists, and AB types as unpredictable. The theory took off in the 1920s and still shows up on dating profiles and in casual small talk, despite having no scientific backing.
In the clip, members of a group casually compare blood types, birth order, and hometowns, treating each shared trait as meaningful (“四人もAB型なの?” — “four of us are AB type?”). This kind of talk is common enough that it has a downside: ブラハラ (bura-hara, “blood-type harassment”) describes real discrimination — being teased, stereotyped, or even passed over for a job — based on blood type, similar to how astrology “types” people in other cultures.
