What does “oshi” mean in Japanese?

推し (oshi)
Japanese fan-culture word
'My fave', the Japanese word for the celebrity, idol, or character you support, now mainstream in everyday speech

推し (oshi) is the Japanese word for “the idol, celebrity, character, or athlete one supports,” literally “the one you push.” The verb 推す (osu) means “to push” or “to recommend,” and the noun oshi started in idol-fandom (especially around AKB48 in the 2010s) for the specific group member a fan champions. From there, oshi escaped into mainstream Japanese: kids talk about their oshi baseball player, mothers about their oshi drama actor.

This clip is a kids' game where a child throws beanbags into cups, each cup attached to a promise. One says “これが入ったら推しのアイドルのライトに行くわ” (“if this lands, I’ll go to my oshi’s concert”). The casual use shows how far oshi has traveled.
