Wacht maar is the only entry in the imperative-plus-maar family with an edge. The verb wacht (wait) plus maar literally produces "just wait," and the phrase keeps that English equivalent's whole double-meaning range: it can be a friendly "hold on a moment," a warm anticipatory promise ("you just wait, this gets better"), or a low-grade threat ("just you wait until I find out who did this").

The pragmatic register is read from context. Wacht maar even (just wait a moment) is service-friendly; wacht maar tot je ziet wat er nog komt is excited anticipation; wacht maar, ik krijg je nog wel is the ironic-or-serious threat. Dutch siblings, partners, and frenemies use wacht maar in this third sense constantly, sometimes affectionately.

The phrase also surfaces in storytelling — a Dutch host or vlogger building suspense will say wacht maar to telegraph "the punchline is coming." In children's stories, the wolf-or-witch character is often introduced with wacht maar directed at the listener.
